Flextronics to wind down Limerick plant

The 150 remaining jobs at the Flextronics plant in Limerick are to go by the end of this year as the company winds down its operation.

The company announced last November that it was laying off 118 staff as part of a global restructuring to cut costs in response to the downturn in the world economy.

The company, which has its headquarters in Singapore, is one of the world's biggest logistics providers for the IT industry and was a major supplier of Dell, which announced it was laying off 1,900 workers last January and a further 100 last week.

There has been no official statement from the company but SIPTU, which represents workers at the plant, has confirmed that the company is to begin laying-off the remaining 150 workers in May.

It is expected that the company will wind down and close by the end of the year.

The union has been in talks with the company about severance packages for the workers and the conditions under which the wind down will happen.
