If you deal with digital products operating at 50 MHz clock frequencies or above, you will face signal integrity problems. These arise when interconnects are not transparent to the signals and the decisions you make about interconnect design affect performance.

In this all day workshop offered on March 17, I will present four different lectures about signal integrity.

The first lecture is about characteristic impedance. This is the most important property of all interconnects. If you are just starting out in signal integrity and are confused about what characteristic impedance really means, this lecture is for you.
The second lecture is about four design guidelines to follow which will help minimize signal integrity problems in your products. I won't have time to cover all the important design rules, but I will explore four very important ones in this lecture.

In the afternoon, the two lectures I present will be about S-parameters. This is a slightly more advanced topic. If you deal with signals above 500 MHz, you have probably encountered S-parameters. It is a concept from the microwave design world which has become critically important in high speed digital design.

Contained in the S-parameters of an interconnect are all of its important electrical properties. To know the S-parameters of an interconnect is to know everything about how an interconnect will behave. They are a very powerful tool to describe high speed interconnects such as circuit boards, connectors, IC packages and cables.

The first S-parameter lecture will be on single-ended S-parameters, important for less than 1 Gbps signals. This will be an important introduction to S-parameter concepts. If you are new to S-parameters, do not miss this lecture.
The last lecture of the day will be about differential S-parameters. This is critically important for all high speed serial links. If you deal with 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps signals, differential S-parameters are an important part of your design. I will introduce what they are, how to use them to describe differential pairs, and how to explore the important information they contain.
If you work in high speed design, these lectures will be important in helping you eliminate signal integrity problems right from the beginning.  There will be something for every designer--from the beginner to the expert.


Detailed descriptions of each lecture follow:


Characteristic Impedance: The Foundations
Characteristic impedance is the most important term that describes the electrical performance of transmission lines. If you are confused about what it really means, this lecture is for you. We will start with the most essential principles of transmission lines and how to think about characteristic impedance. We will explore how design influences it and how you can optimize your circuit board stack up for a target value of characteristic impedance.


Four Habits of Highly Successful Board Designers
While there are many design rules to follow to eliminate signal integrity problems in your circuit board, we will explore four of the most important ones. We will look at each design rule, the problem they are trying to correct, why they fix the problem and a practical approach to apply them in your next design. When we use the same design rule over and over again, they become habits. In this lecture, the four habits we will consider are:

terminating signal lines
avoiding routing stubs
spacing signals far apart, and
using a return via adjacent to every signal via
If you care about signal integrity in your circuit board design, this lecture is for you.


Single-ended S-parameters and Signal Integrity Applications
With digital clock signals over 1 GHz, signals are really in the microwave regime. And, the most effective way of describing the high frequency electrical properties of interconnects is with the microwave concept of Scattering Parameters. Even though S-parameters were originally created in the frequency domain, they can also be extended into the time domain. They are becoming the most important and universal standard to describe interconnects. In this lecture, we will describe what S-parameters are, and how they tell us everything important about the properties of single and coupled transmission lines. If you are a serious signal integrity engineer, S-parameters will absolutely be in your future and this lecture is a great starting place.


Differential S-parameters and Signal Integrity Applications
S-parameters are complicated. Using them to describe differential pairs can be really complicated. In this lecture, we make differential S-parameters easy. We will look at how the principles of single-ended S-parameters can be applied to a differential pair. We will separate the behavior of differential signals and common signals, and how they can be converted from one to the other. Differential S-parameters are not limited to the frequency domain. We will explore the ten most important differential S-parameters in the time and the frequency domain. If you design with differential pairs, this lecture will give you the skills you need to use differential S-parameters to describe your interconnects.

富士康工厂开始量产iPad
  据消息人士透露,由于iPad需求年末有望大幅增长,富士康最近开始在成都新厂生产iPad。
尽管成都生产线的日产量仅为1万台,但仍将有助于缓解供应压力。据预计,到明年第一季度成都工厂将成为一个重要的iPad供应基地。
目前,深圳工厂仍是iPad的主要生产基地,每月最大产能250万台。消息人士称,富士康第四季度iPad发货量可能超过700万台,全年发货量可能达到1500万台。
该消息人士还透露,富士康计划在成都建立50条iPad生产线,使年产量达到4000万台。
据预计,iPad 2将于明年第一季度发布,包括富士康、正崴(Foxlink)和奇美电子在内的企业都将成为该设备的组件供应商。
